Assumptions, sources and version
2026 · nl-2026.1 · v2026.1
- Use inventory and cost of sales on the same cost basis, excluding VAT. Average inventory = (opening + closing) / 2. Turnover uses this average before rounding to cents; this average can be misleading for seasonal businesses.
- Turnover applies to the selected period. Inventory days = period days / turnover. The target scenario keeps the sales rate constant; lower stock must not unintentionally harm availability.

How this tool works
Inventory turnover divides cost of goods sold by average opening and closing stock. Inventory days divide the chosen period length by turnover. The target compares current average stock with daily cost of goods sold multiplied by target days. The difference is modelled capital headroom, not guaranteed cash.
Common questions
Do I use revenue or cost?
Use cost of goods sold and stock valued at cost, excluding VAT. Mixing sales revenue with stock at cost distorts turnover.
What happens with no sales?
With zero cost of goods sold, inventory days cannot be determined. The tool does not present a calculated cash release.
