How this tool works
To add VAT, apply the rate to the net price. To remove VAT, divide the total by 1 plus the rate. Simply subtracting 21% from a VAT-inclusive price gives the wrong result. Select the rate that applies to the supply.
Calculate 21% VAT
€100 × 21% = €21 VAT; including VAT: €121
Multiply the net amount by 0.21 to find VAT. Add it to the base for the gross amount. The 21% shortcut selects this rate; Rekenbox does not determine whether it applies to your transaction.
Reverse VAT: extract VAT from a total
Divide a total including 21% VAT by 1.21. For €121, the net amount is €100 and VAT is €21. Do not subtract 21% of the gross amount; that produces a different result.
Calculate excluding and including VAT
Choose add VAT when starting from a net price, or extract VAT when you know the gross total. Net, VAT and gross results stay together. Monetary amounts are rounded to whole cents.
Calculate 9% VAT
At 9%, €100 net becomes €109 gross. Reverse it by dividing by 1.09. Use the VAT-rounding tool to investigate one-cent differences between rounding each invoice line and rounding the total.
Common questions
Is removing VAT the same as subtracting 21%?
No. VAT is a percentage of the net amount. For €121 including VAT, use €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 net.
Do I need a paid report?
Not for a single VAT calculation. All three amounts are free to view and you can print the result.
How do I extract VAT from €121?
Select 21% and extract VAT. €121 divided by 1.21 is €100 net; the €21 difference is VAT.
Why can VAT differ by one cent?
Rounding each line can differ from rounding the invoice total. Compare both methods with the VAT-rounding calculator.
