How this tool works
Each sale contributes selling price minus variable cost towards fixed costs. Divide fixed costs by that contribution. The tool rounds units up because a fraction of a sale does not yet cover your costs.
Common questions
Which period should I use?
Use the same period throughout. For example, compare monthly fixed costs with the sales you can achieve each month.
Why does a very low selling price prevent a result?
If selling price does not exceed variable cost, a sale makes no positive contribution to fixed costs. There is no achievable break-even volume in this model.
Which details do you need?
- Fixed costs
- Selling price per unit
- Variable cost per unit
