Salary and income

Salary in the Netherlands explained

A Dutch job offer is more than one monthly number. First check the period, contracted hours and additional payments. Then convert gross to net and separately review the employer’s costs. This guide connects the appropriate calculators with the question you are trying to answer.

From gross to take-home pay

Gross salary is pay before deductions. Payroll withholding is an advance payment of income tax and national-insurance contributions. Employee pension, personal contributions and tax-free reimbursements also affect the bank payment. A calculator with only gross salary cannot infer those individual items.

Use monthly salary for your actual contracted hours in Rekenbox. For example, €4,000 for 40 hours becomes €3,200 for 32 hours if the offer scales proportionally. Enter €3,200 and use 32 hours for hourly pay. Tax does not necessarily scale in the same proportion.

Holiday allowance, bonus and thirteenth month

At €3,500 monthly pay, regular gross annual salary is €42,000. An additional 8% holiday allowance is €3,360. A guaranteed €3,500 thirteenth month brings the total to €48,860. Check the contract: an all-in offer may already include holiday pay. Do not count it twice.

Use the special-payment table for a bonus and the corresponding annual wage on your payslip. Reductions in tax credits can increase withholding. This is not a separate tax: the annual assessment considers total income and credits payroll tax withheld.

Worked example
ItemAmount
Regular annual pay€42,000
Holiday allowance 8%€3,360
Thirteenth month€3,500
Total gross annual pay€48,860

Checking the 30% ruling

The ruling requires an official decision, recruitment from abroad and compliance with its conditions. In 2026 the maximum is 30%, capped at €78,600 for a full year. The regular taxable salary threshold is more than €48,013, with exceptions such as qualifying graduates under 30.

The 2027 transition depends on when the ruling was first used. Those who started by 2023 retain 30% under transitional rules; 2024 starters move to 27% with the existing threshold, while starters from 2025 move to 27% with a new threshold. Check indexed amounts and the validity of your decision.

What does the employer pay?

A gross salary offer is not the complete staffing budget. Employers also pay holiday allowance and applicable employee-insurance and healthcare levies. Pension, occupational health and equipment can add further costs. Use the employer-cost calculator to select the contract, employer size and your own Whk rate separately.

Employee or freelancer?

Do not compare a freelance hourly rate directly with an employee’s gross hourly wage. Freelancers pay business expenses and allow for non-billable time, holidays, pension and risk. The ZZP tax calculator starts from profit after costs and estimates income tax, healthcare contributions and quarterly reserves. This differs from employee wages.

From hourly pay to a sample payslip

Convert salary across six periods, select the full-time norm and compare an offer. The payslip generator takes regular pay as a starting point; add pension, supplements, car benefit and reimbursements. With access, a complete series of entered periods can produce a sample annual statement.

Common questions

Is net pay the same for everyone?

No. Tax credits, age, pension, exemptions and other components affect deductions and payment.

Does a thirteenth month count towards annual salary?

A paid thirteenth month forms part of gross income. For income statements, check which fixed and variable components the recipient accepts.

Can I use this to check a job offer?

Yes, as an estimate using the correct contract details. Check different pension or collective-agreement terms with the employer or payroll administrator.

Does Rekenbox determine my tax assessment?

No. The Tax Administration assesses a return using all relevant information. A calculation only shows the model result for your inputs.
